Business Domain Names

A website is the cornerstone of ALL your sales/marketing efforts whether they be online or traditional. Choosing a domain name for your business is a little trickier than you might think. There is some bad information out that has in some ways become common (albeit faulty) knowledge.

Many people think the primary consideration when registering your domain name is the length of it. Certainly a shorter name is easier to remember and type in right? Well, it may be easier to type in but it is not necessarily easier to remember. Consider a hypothetical site named rottenbanana.com . I think you would agree that it is easier to remember than ifbl.com or some other acronym (unless of course you are well know like General Electric but this is rare).

A trickier consideration is whether or to choose a domain name that matches your business name as closely as possible or one that uses words that people search for when looking for your products and services. If you uses words people search for you will give you site a winning edge in your effort to get it ranked highly with search engines. What I have recommended in some cases is to have both. If your business is Rotten Apple Enterprises and you sell skateboards, reserve and host RottenApple.com for your email and redirect the website requests to go to different domain SpringfieldSkateboards.com .

How do I register a website domain name?

Registering a domain name is simple with "Your Domain Pick". Go to the website at yourdomainpick.com, and type in the name you want to reserve (WITHOUT the "tld" ie. .com, .net, etc) then click search.

If the domain name you are looking for is taken, your domain pick will give you a number of suggested alternatives. Wherever possible stick with the .com version of the website. It is what people are most familiar with. If you must have a site name and the .com is taken, use the .net as a second choice.

Once you have your domain name, you can choose a hosting package and even start building a website with your domain pick's "website tonight" service. Good Luck!
